What is NDT?
Non Destructive Testing (NDT) is also known as Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE). NDT is a non-evasive way to check quality integrity of materials without changing the materials intended operation. NDT is used across many industries to promote safety. This covers many required industry practices for Aerospace, Defense, Space, Automotive, Railway, and Oil or Natural Gas Pipelines to name a few.
NDT is a Quality Inspection job. As a trade skill the training structure could be more commonly compared to trades such as Certified Welder, HVAC, or Electrical journeyman
NDT is used to keep the public safe by providing skilled inspections on materials such as Bridges, Roads, Railways, Metal Castings, Composites, Plastics and more. Even the rides at Disney Land employee NDT teams to review the integrity of the rides and tracks.
Some of the most common NDT methods are X-Ray Inspection (RT, CR, DDA) Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) , Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Eddy Current (ET), and Visual Testing (VT).
Each method has their own advantages and are selected to best suit the material under test. The asset owners then provide codes and specifications that control the Qualification and Certification programs for the persons performing these inspections, and for the acceptance criteria needing met.
It's hard to keep track of the required certifications required by industry and method. Or at least it was before OOGA Technologies came along to help you out.
